lessons from the blues brothers

Sometimes I think I have such a great idea that it is worth cutting corners. I can convince myself that "little cheats" will be worth it when the big wonderful thing happens. Then the cheats get a little bigger and my timeline expands and finally I have compromised my own values because my ego thinks it is so smart it can force a good outcome from bad choices.

Yet, time and time again I have experienced God's way to clear the way. Oh I don't mean that following Christ means I can sit on the sofa eating bonbons and watching PBS rather than putting a shoulder to the work needed to achieve good outcomes.

What I mean is that God does not tempt me or require me to cut corners. God may well expect me to labor and perspire and plan and execute with humility and patience. But as the Blues Brothers taught us so well, having good intentions is not enough to prevent property damage and scaring people.

God is just so much more, bigger, wiser, stronger, able, willing and committed than I am able to be. So rather than mixing it up with God, I have learned it is both easier and faster to just get with God's program rather than to keep tweaking my own limited blueprint.

Actually, the day I realized I was not in charge I also realized something of the huge blessing that is. I am freed to do what I was created to do: shine God's light into the world, into the lives of the children God has created, and let God do the heavy lifting.

 His understanding is unsearchable.
