the god who reigns

I naturally would much rather follow my own ideas of what is good and right. After all, I was raised in the generation that believes all that went before us is inferior and fake. My generation believed we can do a much better job than anyone who went before and, especially when we were young, believed that no one over 30 had a clue. Of course, now that I am over 30 I have had to adjust that a bit, but still, I do like being my own god.

Oh, that sounds a little silly when I say it out loud, but in truth that is what we all really want to do. We want what we want when we want it. We worship those who want to "do it my way" no matter the obvious problems that poses. We are quick to judge others as inferior in their capacity to know what is good for them, but are rarely in doubt about our own ability to get things right.

So, I can embrace my own narrow, limited and, if I'm honest, thoroughly faulty way of doing or I can look around to see if there might be a better way. In this age of chaos and unlimited internet gods who can I truly trust?

For me that answer is this: I trust my Creator to have both the capacity and will to have created me for a purpose. And that purpose is to instruct, model, correct, woo, nudge, and attract me to the life we were created to live: a life of worth, hope, peace, joy and love. God reigns. God is Creator. God's rightful place is as the Lord of my life and I owe all to Him. Because human masters have a long history of abuse of power, it is natural that we fear giving our all to God, but God's Will is for the refinement of our best selves, the selves we were created to be. God is trustworthy.

Adonai, God who reigns over all Creation, Ruler of the Universe, Lord of all, reign in me. Help me to trust You, trust Your faithfulness, trust Your commitment to fulfill every promise, trust the innate goodness of each promise you have made to me. Thank You for creating me, sustaining me, teaching me and giving me purpose. Thank you most of all for making it clear to me that I am not in charge. It is a great relief! AMEN
